Hypothyroidism can affect many parts of your body and how you feel day to day. The symptoms often develop slowly and can sometimes be mistaken for general tiredness or stress.

How You May Feel

  • Feeling very tired or lacking energy, even after a good night’s sleep.

  • Feeling cold more than other people, or needing extra layers when others are comfortable.

  • Low mood, feeling down, or depression, sometimes with “brain fog” and poor concentration.

Changes You May Notice in Your Body

  • Unexplained weight gain or finding it very hard to lose weight, even without eating more.

  • Dry skin, dry or thinning hair, or hair loss (including eyebrows in some people).

  • Constipation or less frequent bowel movements than usual.

  • A puffy face, swelling around the eyes, or puffiness in hands and feet.

  • A hoarse or deeper voice than usual.

Muscles, Joints, and Heart

  • Aching muscles, cramps, stiffness, or general weakness.

  • Joint pains or feeling generally “slowed down” in your movements.

  • A slower than normal heart rate or feeling easily breathless and worn out.

Periods and Fertility (For Women)

  • Heavy, irregular, or missed periods.

  • Difficulty getting pregnant or fertility problems.

Important Note

If you notice several of these symptoms, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional. Proper diagnosis and treatment can help you feel better and prevent complications.
